I am a registered psychologist, a doctoral candidate who has not graduated, a huge technology lover, a man constantly fighting off the fat, and a father.
Another rainy day in the city. Its just beautiful when its at night.
So this happened. I returned the very blegh JVC Esnys headphones (they were almost completely gone when I went back! I guess they were stylish to a lot of people) and bought the Nixon MasterBlaster. I had wanted this can for a number of years- probably around 2008 or something when I was really into skater attire- Nixon was one of my favorite brands then. I fell in love with the brown black combo but I couldn’t justify the price for headphones then- I was only using cheapo 30 buck ear buds at the time. So I found these at Winners for a third of their MSRP. They had long been discontinued and it looks like Nixon is pulling out the audio market – their other high end can the RPM is also MIA.
I fell in love with the genuine leather/metal look- there’s almost no plastic on this. These are substantially better than the second in command headphone, the Nomadic. Those felt flimsy and cheap. These feel … heavy. Very very vice like on the head and the least comfortable headphone I own by far. But they are so so beautiful and what I wanted- metal and leather. The sound is a funner sound but its kind of meh so far- my fun all around can favorites, the Sony MDR-1R are still more refined/detailed with enough pop/kick to still make them the better can. But they can’t touch the massive leather pads on these Nixons. I’m happy with them.
It was the Faculty of Medicine/Dentistry convocation day and I had a good chunk of friends/fam in the med grad today! It was really nice to see them all finish up and to think how years ago we were just hanging out in Calculus class in grade 12. Now they’re full blown doctors and ready to take on the rigors of clinical practice. So crazy how time flies.
Everybody forgot to shake hands with our president because she was sitting and everyone walked by her. I must say one of the disappointing things about clinical psychology is that we are considered to be only a research based degree, despite the very professional/clinical orientation. There is no oath of practice speech/inauguration upon graduation, which kind of leaves me with an identity crisis. I mean I am definitely in it for the love of learning (and wholeheartedly agree with the idea of a doctorate of philosophy for my travels – philosophy being the love of learning- hence the blog title), but I feel it misses the other side of being in our program- that we are here to help people and are every bit practitioners as other clinical programs. Sad face. I said this because med/dent had this oath speech. We don’t have this.
Lots of people here to celebrate! I always get giddy when I see the masses of people like this- its just exciting.
And um a congratulatory lunch at our local cafeteria. A Thai coconut curry chicken lunch that was expensive for fast food (12 bucks) but pretty solid- lots of fiber and protein. I would say that it was quite worth the cost relative to other campus fast food/nutritional value, but 12 bucks for fast food is definitely pushing the limits.
