I am a practicing clinician, a recent doctoral graduate who finally graduated school but will never leave school, a huge technology lover, a man constantly fighting off the fat, and a father.
I figured I’d recap my Asia trip since I never really blogged about it when I went in June 2012. Flying into Hong Kong surprised me – I didn’t realize I would be hitting a tropical area- I am so naive. The amount of ocean was also a shock to this prairie born boy.
My favorite foods- Hong Kong cafes with lots of meats and afternoon teas
Simple but delicious dishes- pork chop on instant noodles, egg and toast and ice milk tea
This tower really impressed me- I think it was 70 floors and overlooking the harbor- I would love to see the view from the top
The running trail I had every morning- I would love to be back here to run- the air was terrible though- lots of exhasut fumes
View from our place in Whampoa Gardens.
More afternoon tea- W had sandwiches and I had meat on noodles. The noodles were really good.
Crossing the harbor on a ferry. Its so novel to me but this is everyday commuting for a lot of people.
One of the more memorable features of HK to me. The massive apartment complexes with clothes air drying out the front and air conditioners everywhere
Love the view from down below. It really is a conrete jungle here though
Hot congee place- it was like 40 degrees with humidity and we had delicious but STEAMING congee. I might as well have worn a towel to wipe all my sweat.
I’ve really come to love congee a lot- I can really appreciate the delicate flavors within.
Of course I found electronic stores- and of course they were jerks. Most people here cater to wealthy tourists and not poor traveling grad students, so I didn’t get much service out in Mong Kok. The better stores were away from the touristy areas where the people were passioante about the product and not the sales.
Street vendor food- I ate a ton and I didn’t care of hygiene. The good thing is that W knew which were good vendors and which were not so I didn’t get sick at all here.
Walking HK at night
This is one of my favorite skylines in the world.
I got used to these little green buses and came to love them. Mostly because they had lots of air conditioning.
Noodle place for dinner. Also hot and terrifyingly humid in here for me. I really miss this cheap but delicious food.
Riding a gondola out to a Buddhist place. It got pretty high up here
I read that somebody BASE jumped off one of these gondolas back in canada in Whistler. I just can’t imagine how high these things must be and how much trust you must put into one freaking wire.
Went to a HK pop star concert- I understood zero words but enjoyed the music.
Macau- where the heat was even worse for me, but it was almost like being back in Las Vegas but with rice everywhere.
It was really beautiful in a lot of these places- but I couldn’t shake the vibe that a poor student in this place just doesn’t belong.
Its Vegas, ok? It looked and felt like I was back in America.
I can’t say much about this building. I can say that the termperature was INSANE and I was wearing black jeans. I really regret my clothing choices here. I will need to plan better the next time I goto HK.
Hot clay pot rice- I didn’t actually care that much about this one- it was also insanely hot here- but W’s family loved it and W especially found the rice superb. I didn’t think the flavors were as strong as I’d like them to be. Typical Westerner POV coming out of me. MORE SALT!
